Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park lies in northern Tanzania between the Rift Valley escarpment and the waters of Lake Manyara — full of plants and animals, with tropical birds and monkeys greeting you as soon as you arrive. It is compact but captivating.

What to see

• Diverse wildlife: famous tree-climbing lions — a behaviour rarely seen elsewhere — plus elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, buffalo and several antelope species.
• Birdwatcher’s paradise: more than 400 bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, storks and kingfishers.
• Scenic landscapes: groundwater forest, open grassy plains and the lake shore, with the escarpment behind.
• Hot springs and waterfalls: the Maji Moto hot springs and the Maji Moto waterfalls.

Best time to visit

June to October is the most popular period, with clear skies and animals gathered at the remaining water. November to May is lush and green, with migratory birds, though some areas can flood.
